Seeds & Sowing

New for 2026, every dahlia collection purchased will include our exclusive range of Dahlia Beach flower seeds, featuring zinnias, cosmos and amaranthus. These seeds have been lovingly collected from the annual flowers grown on our farm and won’t be available to purchase anywhere else, making them a special addition to your collection.

The seeds we are most excited about are the zinnias, originally planted in 2024 from Floret* seeds. Over the past two years they have cross-pollinated with other zinnia varieties, to produce an especially diverse range of colours, forms and personalities.

The Perfect Companion Flowers for Dahlias

When designing our collections, we carefully choose flowers that complement dahlias both in the garden and in a vase. Zinnias, cosmos and amaranthus are some of our favourite annual flowers because they bring colour, movement and texture to the garden while flowering generously throughout the summer months.

All of our seeds have been naturally cross-pollinated over the past two seasons on our farm in Woodstock. Cross-pollination happens when pollen from one plant is carried by bees and other pollinators, and fertilises the flower of another plant of the same species but a different variety. This creates a mix that is wonderfully varied in colour, shape and character & means each packet contains the potential for beautiful and unexpected combinations that have never been created before.

Planted alongside your dahlias, these flowers help create a layered cut flower garden full of interest - and you’ll be able to fill spaces in the garden while your dahlias grow.

FAQs

What are annual flowers?

Annual flowers complete their entire life cycle in one growing season. From seed, they grow into plants, produce flowers, set seed and naturally finish at the end of the season. Zinnias, cosmos and amaranthus are all annuals, meaning they grow quickly and flower generously throughout summer.

When should I sow zinnia, cosmos and amaranthus seeds?

Most annual flower seeds can be sown indoors from March to April, or directly outdoors from May, once the risk of frost has passed. Starting seeds indoors can give them a helpful head start.

Are these seeds available to buy separately?

No - these Dahlia Beach seeds are exclusive to our collections and are not available to purchase separately. They are included as a special addition to help you create your own cut flower garden at home.

Can I grow these flowers alongside dahlias?

Yes, they are perfect companion plants for dahlias. Zinnias, cosmos and amaranthus all thrive in sunny conditions and well-drained soil, making them ideal partners in a summer flower garden. You’ll be able to fill spaces in the garden while your dahlias grow, creating the abundant, flower-filled look we love here at Dahlia Beach.

Are these flowers good for cutting?

Absolutely. All three varieties are popular cut flowers and are commonly grown by flower farmers for bouquets and arrangements.
